Moving

March 10th, 2004

Robotperson is moving: virtually and actually.

First virtually: Over the last week my web hosts, Portland, have
been under assault
. Someone with a grudge has launched a denial
of service attack, and to protect their network Portland have taken
the targeted box offline. Robotperson, and all the other sites hosted
thereon have been down as a result.

Whilst I’m sympathetic, and have slim grounds for complaint when
the service has been free anyway, the outage is still very annoying. It
isn’t the first time they’ve caused me problems
either,
so the time has come to vote with my feet.

This very
timely thread
on Andy
Budd’s site
(a fellow Brightonian) recommends digitalspace,
and thus the whole tedious business of researching a new host has been
avoided. I’m now happily paying $3 a month, and robotperson is
coming to you live and direct from Lompoc,
California
.

Second, and rather more significantly, we’re also moving in base reality
(or meatspace).
Our home is very cosy, but getting some extra space well in advance of
any genes propagating seems like a good idea. Our place is under offer,
and after 20+ viewings of varied quality, last weekend we found the perfect
home for us.

After a bit of back and forth our offer was accepted on Monday, and
so hopefully we’ll be ascending the next rung of the property ladder
in the very near future.

The new place is 100 yards down the road, and I’m hoping that
this proximity will alleviate the otherwise phenomenal pain-in-the-ass
that moving house always is.
