Beer Champions League night 2 results

May 8th, 2005

Champions LeagueIf you don’t know the story, see here for more on the Beer Champions League, here for group stage 1 results.

Regular readers will be baying for the results of the second group stage, which took place on Tuesday night during Liverpool’s valiant defeat of Chelsea. The night went well and I’m satisfied that the format has settled into something smooth. Not that the beer judgements were any easier to make, though. In an atmosphere of incredible tension (and salty snacks) we had another penalty drink-off, and proceedings were suspended for 10 minutes as the football reached it’s fevered conclusion.

Results

As before, beers were tested blind with identities revealed only after results were in. Groups were randomly drawn with one seed* per group. Win=3pts; draw=1pt. Top 2 beers in each group qualify for the final.

Corona* 4 4 0 6 0 3 17
Cobra 0 1 6 0 5 0 12

So there we have it. Stella, surely the Real Madrid of beers, is surprisingly knocked out in an abject 4th place in group G. Kingfisher rates as highest scoring beer on the night, although Löwenbräu still pips it for highest scoring qualifier overall when you factor in the extra taster tonight (32 for Lowenbrau, 31.2 for Kingfisher). Portuguese contender Superbok and fancied outsider Cruzcampo both go through, although both Robotperson pub favourites Sol and Corona fail to qualify (looks like I should be ordering San Miguel from now on).

Final date: Wednesday 25 May, the instant knockout stage. The draw will be made randomly, but according to night 1 group winners x night 2 runners-up, and vice-versa. Let the knockout stage begin!
