Web annoyances

September 22nd, 2005

How to annoy me with your website:

  • Make pages open in new windows. This is especially annoying for pages within your site, but outbound links which open new windows also irritate. If I want to come back to your page I will use the ‘back’ button, and so will everyone else.
  • Pop-up new windows for your special content. My browser’s pop-up blocker kills most, and the rest open in a new tab anyway, breaking your carefully sized and positioned effect. Don’t bother.
  • Force me to ‘learn’ how to use your special interface. I don’t want to explore, or interact in exciting ways that reflect your brand in order to learn about your product. On the very rare occasions when this is permissible your content had better be worth it.
  • Use Flash for purposes that HTML is better suited. Flash can be terrific for a handful of mainly marketing oriented contexts. Stick to them. [thanks Simon, Pete for links]

Notice: link_pages is deprecated since version 2.1! Use wp_link_pages() instead. in /home/p9a76588/public_html/wp-includes/functions.php on line 3692
