- Walkit.com. Enter your start point and end point, and it gives a Google-maps style view of the best route by foot, complete with path overlay, calorie count for various paces (Robotperson is a brisk walker), time, and CO2 emissions avoided. Seems to work for the whole of the UK, too. Fantastic idea, terrific execution.
- The Independent reveals that Kellogs loads UK breakfast cereals with sugar and salt
On British shelves, the Kellogg’s high-fibre All-Bran contains 133 per cent more salt than in the US while the spin-off All-Bran Yoghurt has 117 per cent more sugar. Britons breakfasting on Special K - promoted as the healthy way to start the day - are munching 31 per cent more sugar.
Lara and I switched to Sainsbury’s bran flakes a couple of years ago for exactly this reason, much to her initial protestation. They aren’t as moorish, but that’s because they’re not loaded with sugar and salt! Lara got used to it within a week. Throw in a handful of raisins and you’ve got natural extra sweetness, and you’re on your ways-to-5.

- The Independent on increased carbon emissions from flat screen tv’s:
flat screen televisions larger than 24 inches use more than three times the electricity of their conventional counterparts.
There are currently 63 million television sets in the UK, which use 9.6 terra watt hours of electricity each year and are estimated to be responsible for 1 million tonnes of carbon.
The MTP estimates the number of televisions in Britain will rise to 67 million sets by 2010 - a 6 per cent increase. But the power consumed by the sets will leap to an estimated 15.7 terra watt hours - and carbon emissions will jump to 1.7 million tonnes a year.
