Myspace

January 8th, 2007

Well, I’ve signed up to Myspace. Not because I’m in desperate need of social networking (although the whole idea is starting to grow on me), or because I secretly have the mentality of a 14 year old (although I actually do), but because I’m interested in it. Interested, and also the fact that more and more people I meet are asking me if I have a page, and it’s an affront to my geek credentials when I have to tell them “no”.

But I have to say, the whole experience of getting around Myspace - the navigational structure, the user interface, the common processes - is appallingly bad. Really, really terrible. I hate it. The single most prominent element that I see on my profile page is “Robotperson is in your extended network”. Of course I am; I’m bloody me. You, Myspace site, should know this by virtue of the fact that I am logged-in.

Also, when I try to reply to a comment on my profile page I get an error stating “You must be someone’s friend to make comments about them”. Er …so I have to add myself as a friend to my own account before replying to a comment? No comprende.

In fact the whole thing seems a little valueless and hollow to me. Okay, it’s nice if people add me as a friend, but I don’t think it’ll make any difference to how much I value them personally. But then, I’m not really the target audience I suppose.

Here it is: robotperson’s myspace page.

Please, please, please add me!
