Nerdbots, via Raj at R27. Very cool, and respect for finding a way to monetise their robot building. They’ve got a fold problem on their home page though (on my monitor, at least): It doesn’t invite scrolling down and I missed the robots.
Take on me: Aha’s famous video with the lyrics replaced by a literal […]

Holding hands

Friday, October 10th, 2008

In the last week or so Ruby has just become large enough to hold my hand properly: palm to palm, instead of gripping on to a finger or two.
I don’t know why this feels so different from the finger grip, but it is. And it’s lovely.

Robots

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

I have to tell you: today whilst freestyling our way through Richard Scarrys Best Storybook Ever (“Ruby, what can you see?”), Roo pointed at the cute little android on the page and said “Robot!”.
I’m not sure where she picked it up from; certainly not from me. But my circuits were glowing with pride.
That’ll […]

TR2N

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

This is worth a post in its own: TR2N (that’s Tron 2 - goik!) is on its way. Here’s a tiny, surreptitiously cellphone-cam bootlegged version of the trailer, although it looks more like a single preview sequence to me.
Tron is revered at Robotperson towers as anyone that has been admitted to the inner sanctum […]

Adios Detica

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

Last Friday I left Detica, the consultancy where, for the past year, I’ve suckled at the corporate teat. Lara has always said that it’s possible to tell whether you’re going to like a job within the first week of being there. If I had trusted that instinct I would have been out a lot sooner.
My […]

Birth story

Monday, January 14th, 2008

“Did you hear that?”
“What?”
“That pop.”

It was 00.45, Friday night into Saturday morning, and I’d just settled into bed having cleaned out Joe and Viv at Joe’s poker night. My clattering had woken Lara and she’d taken the opportunity to visit the bathroom. Her trip must have triggered something, and when she got […]

Oblivion with Bells

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

Stef burned Oblivion with bells for me, the latest Underworld album. My first impressions are underwhelming.
It starts strongly, in a mellow, low tempo way, with Crocodile. This track has featured in at least one Essential Mix recently, and it stoked my expectations for the album. It segues smoothly into Beautiful Burnout, a blissful number. It’s […]

Sick leave

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

I am completely unable to enjoy any time that I take off as sick leave.
Perhaps enjoy is the wrong word. You’re not supposed to be enjoying yourself; maybe ‘relax’ would be better. I am completely unable to relax when I’m off ill.
I spend my time sat at my computer, thinking that I should […]

Essential

Monday, October 8th, 2007

To reach the essence of things, all non-essential elements must be eliminated
- Dr. Koichi Kawana.
This is a lesson that most web content publishers would benefit from. Interestingly, it had never occurred to me before that the word ‘essential’ is rooted in the idea of ‘essence’.
