A year in the saddle
August 30th, 2004
It’s my blogging anniversary! My first post was a year ago last Sunday.
Regular readers will soon be able to earn Nectar points for their continued patronage, but for the mean time your loyalty can only be rewarded with gratitude.
And a bonanza of links:

A Jedi does not seek revenge …but apparently a Sith does. The title of Star Wars: Episode III has been announced, and although I’m not exactly overwhelmed with it, I’m definitely whelmed. Revenge of the Sith has an old-school Star Wars feel which, with any luck, the actual movie will have too. What am I talking about? that’s way too much to hope for. But it is Star Wars and critical faculties are permanently suspended. Roll on May ’05.

More sci-fi, and I’m astonished to read that the BBC radio 4 ismaking a new series of the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy – this one an adaptation of the 4th book in the series, Life, the Universe and Everything.
I regard H2G2 as a deeply formative influence: The radio shows pre-dated the books, and I remember listening to the very first series with Dad – afters wimming club on a Tuesday night, 1978(?). My copies of the books are in very, very poor condition.
More astonishment: they’ve managed to re-unite most of the original cast for it. I don’t think I’ve ever been more confident that a seque was going to live up to my expectations. And thanks to some electronic magic Douglas Adams will posthumously play the role of Agrajag. I think I’m going to need my towel todab at the corners of my eyes when I hear that episode.

FiPFM. FiP (pronounced ‘pheep’) is a French radio stationfor which the word ‘eclectic’ was invented. No adverts and hardly any talking will immediately tweak the interest of anyone tired of the dirge on our own airways, but the fact that the signal fades somewhere around the South Downs gives FiP the extra appeal of Brightonian exclusivity.
Except for the fact that everyone can listen to Fip online. Be prepared for a load of music you’ve never heard before. Via yummywakame.

TheBulwer-Lytton fiction contest
“The goal of the contest is childishly simple: entrants are challenged to submit bad opening sentences to imaginary novels.”
Genius. Improves with re-reading.

I get hysterical with laughter maybe two or three times a year. Maybe it was a particularly good Seinfeld that got me in the mood, or perhaps it was the beer, but on Wednesday night this incredible artefact made the tears come. If the auction has ended, maybe the results of a search for tigerhead wooden wall-clock will give you some idea of what I’m talking about.
- More tigers, via Lara. White tiger cub triplets born in China. Cute.

More eBay: KITT from Knight Rider.
This highly-modified 1983 Pontiac Trans Am is an originalscreen-used hero car used during the second season of the hit TVseries.
Bonus points for remembering what KITT stood for.

Newsmap: an incredible news aggregating service – like Googlenews but much more impressive.
It uses colour to denote flavour of news; shade to indicate how fresh an article is; physical dimension to indicate how many related articles there are (i.e. how important the item is); and it can be regionalised.
By my reckoning that’s a five-dimensional news space (at least) on a single page. Awesome. Requires flash and annoyingly doesn’t seem to work in Firefox.
Here’s to another year of nonsense 😉
