Wedding
August 10th, 2003
I very much like this date for several reasons. First of all, it’s close. We will have been engaged for just over 6 months by the time the big day comes around, which means only 6 months of planning, agonising, talking, and allowing it to take over our lives. It also means that I don’t have to introduce Lara as "my finacée" for any longer than necessary. Try actually saying it out loud:
"That’s my fiancée you’re talking to"
"Take your hands of my fiancée!"
It’s bad.
Second, the sooner the better. We’ve been together for long enough now to know that it’s right, and I really can’t see any point in a protracted engagement. Once this is out of the way we can start getting on with the rest of our lives.
Third, symmetry. I proposed on Lara’s birthday, and we’re getting married on mine. This appeals to my sense of elegance in an almost mathematical way.
It also means I’m never going to forget the anniversary, although the pessimists would see this as forever losing any reasonable excuse for not remembering the anniversary.
Anyway, I’m still hoping that this coincidence might allow me to invoke some sort of gift-antigift annihilation rule. Under such a rule my birthday present and her anniversary gift would cancel each other out, leaving only a brief flash of energy and an anniversarial token for me.
Fourth, 27.9.03 = 3^3 / 3^2 / 3^1.
