Fatality at Purley Oaks
August 14th, 2003
After work this evening my colleagues and I went round the corner to Babushka’s on Caledonian Road, for their new upstairs bar launch. Mind-bogglingly, this comprised not only of a free bar, but also decent waitress service and copious canapés. I love finger food (and culinary assonance), and as per usual, ate well beyond the point of hunger satiation.
When I ran the conference office at ULU (see Work History) I would book conference lunches into rooms that I knew were free in the afternoon. When the meetings resumed we’d go downstairs and raid the leftovers, and in this way my reputation for bad behaviour at the buffet was formed. Lara gets embarrassed, but I just can’t help it.
Tonight’s delights reached their apogee with some rather tasty cocktail sausages dipped in honey. I have a secret and shameful love affair with sausages at buffets, but I can report that these were nothing to rival either the gourmet sausages basted with honey and rosemary (served in … wait for it… a hollowed out bread!) at Tom & Emma’s wedding, or the split sausages filled with piped mash at Miranda’s nuptials last Saturday.
The upshot of this is that I’m not at all hungry as I accelerate away from the Purley region, where I’ve been delayed by something like half an hour because of a fatality (read suicide) on the line.
