Ambient Music

August 5th, 2003

A month or two ago I caught myself humming a few bars of Jerusalem on the way in to work. It took a week or so to work out that the first four notes of this piece are exactly the same as the chimes that herald announcements at KXT:

"bing-bing-bing biing"

"and did these feet"

After this, It was fairly easy to work out why I habitually whistle part of Mozart’s The Magic Flute whilst waiting for the lift at work: The security door requires a four digit code followed by an enter:

"dit-dit-dit-dit doo"

– which you may or may not recognise as the last 5 notes of the opera’s main riff:

"diddle-iddle it-dit-dit-dit, dit-dit-dit-dit doo"

Now that’s what I call Ambient music.
