Disconnections

August 7th, 2003

I’m writing this as my train is reversing back into London Bridge. My journey home this evening has consisted principally of sitting on a stationary train behind a set of jammed points, and this is where we’ve been for about an hour. The word stifling comes to mind, although drowning might better convey the sense of airlessness (and quantity of sweat) in here.

Update: A tube ride, a train hop, and a short wait at Clapham Junction later, and I’m whizzing home on a South Central Electrostar: A train which not only gets me home more quickly than the Thameslinks, but is also <gasp!> air conditioned.

Making a good set of transport decisions when navigating through such a crisis can be very satisfying. I’m certain that I’ve made better time by ignoring the advice at London Bridge and going solo. Honourable mention must be made of a helpful attendant at London Bridge Tube, without whom I would’ve gone to Clapham Central instead of Junction. Doh!. Boots must also be mentioned in despatches for supplying an exceptional dinner:

Lincolnshire sausage and smoke flavoured sweet cure bacon layered with egg mayonnaise and tomato relish on baked bean flavoured bread

Now, did I leave enough food this morning to feed The Mule for the whole day?
